Rod Durham Scholarship

Deadline: April 05, 2024 @ 5:00 PM EDT

Rod Durham, affectionately known to his students as “Durham,” taught writing, theater, and dramatic art for more than 19 years at Leon High School, his alma mater.  During that time, Durham transformed Leon’s drama program—and touched the lives of students who looked to him as a teacher, director, and mentor. Under his creative, visionary and impassioned direction, Leon’s drama department grew. So did its reputation as an award-winning program whose acting troupes consistently earned “superior” ratings and “best-in-show” awards in district and state competitions. Today, District 1 Troupe 1429 is known throughout North Florida for its excellence. Durham, who graduated from Leon High School in 1982,  also transformed the Thespians from a service club for actors into a community for students in all of the performing arts.

Millions were inspired by his wit and grit as a cast member on ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss, where he committed a year to transform his life.

In memory of Durham’s Leon legacy, a one-time scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a student who has been transformed by the arts and wants to pursue the craft of acting, creative writing, stage performance or production.
